Tourist transport in Greece

Buses

The main means of intercity transport in Greece are buses. They are operated by the KTEL organization. On the surface, everything looks good, but KTEL is actually an association of more than 60 carriers, each of which is an independent company with its own ticketing system and way of operating. So if you are planning a longer journey with transfers within different carriers, you will have to buy a separate ticket from each of them.

Trains

Greece has a poorly developed railway infrastructure, which only allows transport between certain centres, so trains are not the most popular means of transport among Greeks, and there are no crowds in the trains.

Rail transport in Greece is the responsibility of the national carrier Hellenic Railways Organisation (they use the Greek abbreviation OSE).

Cruises

Greece is not only a mainland part, but also several thousand islands. Admittedly, we can’t get to all of them easily, but luckily for us, there are many connections to the most popular ones. However, we should remember that the sea route is a very slow means of transport – it will take up to several hours to get from Piraeus to Rhodes or Crete.
